How to Fix a Dell Laptop that Keeps Restarting Itself

No matter how maintained you keep your Dell Windows laptop, it may sometimes fail to live up to your expectations. Dell laptop keeps automatically restarting is one such problem that you may have to face due to bad hard disk drive, corrupt CD or DVD drive, or corrupt RAM (memory) module(s) among other things. This Dell laptop support tutorial discusses how you fix the Dell laptop keeps restarting itself problem on your own.


Step 1
Grab your Dell Windows 7 setup media (Windows Vista or XP for that matter) and place it in the drive of your Dell laptop and restart your Dell laptop. As the laptop boots, you will see the option to press the F12 key. Hit the key on the keyboard and select the option to boot via the installation media.

Step 2
When prompted, click the Repair your computer option and hit the Enter key. You will see a list of options listed in the System Recovery Options. Click the Command Prompt option and select your operating system when prompted. If prompted, enter your administrator password and continue.

Step 3
When in the Command Prompt window, type ‘chkdsk /r' (with due space between chkdsk and r) and hit the Enter key. Wait while disk checking and repair is in progress. When done, close the Command Prompt window and restart your Dell laptop. Take the installation media out when done.

Step 4
If the problem persists, reboot your Dell laptop and press the F12 key when you see the Dell logo. You need not insert the Windows 7 setup media to your Dell computer this time. Depending on your Dell boot option, you may have to press the 0 (zero) key instead of F12.

Step 5
When in the One Time Boot menu, click Diagnostics and hit the Enter key. If you receive any error message from the given error codes 1000-0122; 1000-0123; 2000-0123, you will need to remove and reseat the memory modules of your Dell laptop. If you need help reseating the modules, refer to your Dell laptop support manual.

Step 6
If the memory (RAM) modules are corrupt, back up your data and replace them. If you receive any error code from the given list 1000-0141; 2000-0141; 1000-0142; 2000-0142; 1000-0143; 2000-0143; 1000-0144; 2000-0144; 1000-0145; 2000-0145; 1000-0146; 2000-0151; 2000-0146, remove and reinstall your hard disk drive.

Step 7
Refer to your Dell manual about how to remove and reinstall the hard drive in your Dell laptop. Replace the hard drive if failed or died. Do not forget to back up your data before replacing the hard drive.  If you receive any error code from 1000-0147; 2000-0147; 1000-0148; 2000-0148; 2000-0149; 2000-0152, you will need to reinstall the CD- or DVD-ROM drive.

Step 8
Depending on your Dell laptop problems, the Dell Diagnostics utility may give you specific error codes and tell you to reinstall or replace the corrupt hardware component(s). Do as prompted. If you are unable to replace or reinstall the components or fix the Dell laptop problems on your own, contact Dell technical support.
